Orthodox Education (Sunday School)

The Christian Education Department of St. John the Baptist Antiochian Orthodox Church follows the guidelines established by the Orthodox Christian Education Commission (OCEC) as part of a comprehensive Orthodox eduction for both youth and adults.

The Orthodox Christian Education Commission is an agency of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in America. It was founded in 1957 by a group of Orthodox theologians and educators as a forum to exchange ideas and to search for solutions to common educational problems. It currently aims to develop and publish educational material for and offers support services to Orthodox Christian Churches in North America.

The OCEC is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of jurisdictional representatives. Under the Presidency of Metropolitan Philip Saliba of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese, the Commission seeks to encourage cooperation among member jurisdictions. The daily operations of the Commission are conducted by an Executive Board, composed of a Chairman (the Vice President of the Commission) and the various heads of the departments.

Creative Festival 2011

Creative Festivals

The Department of Christian Education coordinates the Art, Poetry, Creative Writing and Photography festivals. The Department of Youth and the Fellowship of St. John the Divine coordinate the Bible Bowl and Oratorical Festival. The festivals continue to be sponsored by the Fellowship of St. John the Divine. As in the past, without the time and effort of their members the festivals would not be possible.

Amazing resources are coming for your use in implementing the Creative Festivals! As our children know very little about theme, we wanted to provide more resources for this year's Festivals. We also have a rare opportunity for the children to learn about the roles of the clergy. Hence, more time has been spent developing these materials with the hope that the children will not only be able to express the theme creatively, but also truly appreciate those who work for our salvation. Here is what we are almost finished developing:

  • “Using the Theme Throughout the Year Ideas,” with appended illustrations.
  • Quotes about the priesthood from the Church Fathers for bulletin boards.
  • Group photo of Clergy from 2010 Clergy Symposium
  • Other photos of clergy from the Symposium.
  • Background Information page for Catechists
